Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black

Santos Chaj, a Guatemalan immigrant, is in Litchfield's ICE holding pen. She speaks the indigenous language Ki'che, and no officer has made an effort to find a translator. In episode 10, she makes and drinks a parsley tea. In episode 11, she's taken to the medical unit for vaginal bleeding. The staff think she's crying because they assume she thinks she's miscarrying, but have no way to translate for her that the pregnancy is still viable.

Natalie Figueroa, the former assistant to the warden, insists on procuring a translator, and when they do, they inform Santos that her pregnancy is viable. Santos shares that she doesn't want to have the baby, and when Natalie asks the ICE officers to allow her to go to a women's clinic for an abortion, they refuse. Natalie goes to her OB/GYN, who's been assisting her with IVF, and pretends to be pregnant, saying she does not want to have a baby in this messed up world. The doctor writes a prescription, and Natalie sneaks into the ICE holding pen to give Santos the pill, presumably the abortion pill.

Keywords: self-managed abortion, self-induced abortion, abortion pill.
