Evangeline is a 13-year-old pregnant as a result of years of sexual abuse from her step-father. She runs away from Ohio to New York to obtain an abortion, and her evangelical parents track her down and try to stop her. Her mother at first refuses to believe that her husband is capable of rape, and then says that even if he is, the baby is a gift from God. The Ohio District Attorney attempts to intervene, demanding the arrest of the NYPD detectives for attempting to "murder" a future Ohioan. Meanwhile, the court places Evangeline in the custody of New York state so that she can have the abortion. Eventually, Detective Benson is able to convince Evangeline's mother to leave her husband and support her daughter.
