Research was instrumental in the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision June 27, 2016, on Whole Woman’s Health v Hellerstedt, which partially overturned Texas House Bill 2 (HB 2). The court relied heavily on testimony from ANSIRH Director, Dr. Daniel Grossman, and research conducted by the Texas Policy Evaluation Project (TxPEP), where Dr. Grossman is an investigator. TxPEP’s public health research aided in demonstrating that the law placed an undue burden on women without any benefit to their health.

Dr. Grossman wrote a Viewpoint piece titled, “The Use of Public Health Evidence in Whole Woman’s Health v Hellerstedt,” in JAMA Internal Medicine on how TxPEP research helped establish a judicial precedent for using public health evidence to evaluate abortion laws.
