Abortion does not increase risk of PTSD

Analysis of Turnaway Study data has shown that women who had abortions were not at a higher risk of PTSD than women who were turned away from having an abortion due to facility gestational limits. Women in the study who had symptoms of PTSD reported a wide range of traumatic events as causes for their symptoms. The most commonly reported causes of PTSD symptoms among women in the study were violence, abuse, and unlawful activity.

Results of this analysis were published in BMJ Open and are available to View and download from the journal’s website.

We also created an infographic highlighting our results.
