Kate shares with Toby that when she was a teenager, her abusive boyfriend Marc got her pregnant, and she had an abortion. She hasn't told anyone until now. Toby is supportive but confused about why Kate kept this secret from him, especially while they spent two years discussing pregnancy. We see flashbacks to Kate going to a clinic in Pennsylvania and having to listen to a script and wait 24 hours before being able to have the abortion. Back in 2021, Kate and Toby drive to San Diego to confront Marc about his terrible behavior. While she doesn't tell him about the abortion, Kate leaves feeling relieved and free.
