Henry 'Hopper' Nash and Nicky have six weeks left before they are deployed. Henry pursues Caddie Winger, a local woman who he assumes is wealthy because she lives in a mansion, but it turns out that her mother is a maid there. After some misadventures, they become an item. Meanwhile, Nicky's girlfriend, Sally Kaiser, is pregnant. He attempts to get $150 from Henry for an abortion. Henry asks Caddie for help, assuming she's rich. Instead of explaining the truth to him, she attempts to steal a necklace from her mother's employer. She is caught and confesses the reason she needs the necklace, and her mother's employer lends her the money. Sally has the abortion and Henry berates Nicky for not being there for her. This eventually strengthens their friendship as they head off to war.
