Maria Wyeth is a successful actress unhappily married to a producer who is depressed. Maria tells her story from inside a psychiatric institution and reflects on what brought her there. Maria has an affair with a screenwriter, and when she tells her husband about her pregnancy, he demands that she get an abortion. Maria has a series of one night stands and illegal misadventures. She returns to LA to witness her best friend commit suicide.
