Murdoch Mysteries

This Canadian show is based on novels by Maureen Jennings and available to US viewers on Hulu and Netflix. It follows William Murdoch, a detective in Toronto around the turn of the twentieth century. In this episode, Detective Murdoch investigates a young woman's death. According to Dr. Julia Ogden, the coroner and the Detective's girlfriend, she bled to death after self-inducing an abortion. Dr. Ogden reveals a past abortion to Detective Murdoch, saying that she almost died in the process but does not regret it because it allowed her to become a physician. This shocks Detective Murdoch, who is a religious Catholic, and causes him to question whether to continue their relationship. The Detective also learns about the existence of birth control pills in this episode. In a later episode, Dr. Ogden reveals that her illegal abortion left her infertile.
