Doing Time on Maple Drive centers on the dysfunctional Carter family: Phil, Lisa, and their adult children Karen, Tim, and Matt. Tim is an alcoholic and Matt's recent car crash was a suicide attempt brought on by the pressure of being gay and closeted from his conservative parents. Lisa is in deep denial about these issues. Karen's husband Tom learns that Karen is pregnant and she's considering having an abortion because of the horrible family dynamics. Tom implores Karen not to have the abortion and moves away with her to get them away from Phil's problems, but Karen decides to have the abortion anyway.
