This film tells the story of one day in the lives of the various people who populate a police detective squad. A New York detective is one of a precinct of cops in grim daily battle with the city's criminals. His obsessive pursuit of an abortion provider leads him to a discover that his wife had a prior abortion that left her unable to have children. He briefly leaves his wife after learning of her abortion, then begs for her forgiveness at the end of the movie.
