For Colored Girls

For Colored Girls

The movie is based on Ntozake Shange's poem, "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." Unlike the original play, the movie has given each of the 20 characters names related to a color they represent. Each of the poems deal with  issues that particularly impact women of color. After learning that one character is pregnant, another woman shares her past abortion and where to find an illegal abortion provider. The abortion provider is depicted as drunk and terrifying. She has the abortion, but passes out on the street as a result.

Keywords: Past abortion, pregnancy decision, provider character.
