Ken Carter accepts the job of basketball coach for his old high school in Richmond, CA. He demands that all players sign written contracts stipulating respectful behavior and good grades. Initial resistance is dispelled as the team becomes a undefeated competitor. When the overconfident team's behavior begins to stray with too many doing poorly in class, Carter cancels all team activities until the team shows acceptable academic improvement. One particular player, Kenyon Stone struggles to come to terms with his girlfriend Kyra being pregnant; Kyra eventually has an abortion and he goes to college on a basketball scholarship.
