Boston Legal

Boston Legal

The law firm takes on the case of a 15-year-old Chinese immigrant, Kim, who is seeking judicial bypass to have an abortion. Throughout the episode, we learn that two of the lawyers have abortions in their past: Shirley Schmidt, who wants to recuse herself from the case because she feels that she "never got over" her abortion, and Alan Shore, who says he's been part of two abortions in the past, which reaffirms his pro-choice position. Meanwhile, Shirley is concerned that Kim is pursuing an abortion because the fetus is female. Kim maintains that she does not want to parent, and her own mother intervenes to try and stop the abortion. Kim fires Shirley as her lawyer. The judge grants Kim a judicial bypass.
