ANSIRH Update: May 2017

Fifteen years ago, in 2002, Drs. Felicia Stewart and Tracy Weitz founded Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH). This year, we are celebrating one and a half decades of conducting innovative, rigorous, multidisciplinary research on complex issues related to people’s sexual and reproductive lives.

As part of our 15th anniversary celebration, we are launching ANSIRH Updates—a quarterly email digest to keep you better informed on our research, our communications efforts, and recognition for ANSIRH's work.

In our first edition, we are including our accomplishments so far in 2017.

3 New ANSIRH-ites

ANSIRH's team is growing! Here's an introduction to three new members brought on this year.

Carol Camlin, PhD, MPH. Dr. Camlin is Associate Professor in Residence in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and affiliated with the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health and Center for AIDS Prevention Studies. Her research crosses the disciplines of social demography, sociology and public health, and focuses on gender, HIV, and population mobility. She is Principal Investigator of a 5-year study to examine the impact of mobility on HIV transmission dynamics and care cascade outcomes in communities participating in the Sustainable East Africa Research in Community Health (SEARCH) trial. She also contributes expertise in applying mixed methods approaches and behavioral and social theory within HIV intervention and implementation studies as Co-Investigator of several randomized controlled trials in health systems and communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Heather Lipkovich, MPH . Ms. Lipkovich worked at both Planned Parenthood of Michigan coordinating both a LARC clinical trial and research surrounding abortion access and the Henry Ford Health System where she managed multiple projects including influenza surveillance, surgical quality improvement, and cancer epidemiology. Additionally, Heather has participated in international maternal health research as well as sexual health and rights education and activism in her home state of Michigan. Ms. Lipkovich is especially interested in the impact of policy on equitable, non-judgmental access to abortion and other reproductive health services, particularly for underserved and vulnerable populations. She received her BS in Microbiology from Michigan State University and an MPH from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Monica Getahun, MPH. Monica Getahun currently serves as the Project Manager for the SEARCH Qualitative and Mobility in SEARCH Studies and as a qualitative research advisor for several other trials. Ms. Getahun is a first generation immigrant from Ethiopia, and brings over twelve years in applied research and evaluation. She’s worked in evaluation and strategic planning initiatives with foundations, governments, consultancies and non-profits in health and education, both in the US and abroad, and is a former RWJF and CDC Evaluation Fellow. Monica also serves as a consultant with an NGO based in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where she provides technical advice on qualitative studies of knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about Ebola. Her particular areas of interest include culturally responsive research and evaluation approaches, diversity equity and inclusion in research, and health/human rights. Ms. Getahun received her MPH from Thomas Jefferson University, and her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from Emory University.
