ANSIRH Update: April 2018

Welcome to the April 2018 ANSIRH Update. We are off to a very productive start with 14 new publications, over 100 media articles, and an award for and billboard featuring ANSIRH's Monica McLemore!

Publications

So far in 2018, ANSIRH has published 14 peer-reviewed articles in PLOS ONE, AJPH, BMC Health Services Research, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, and other well-known journals. Topics include telemedicine provision of medication abortion, the regulation of abortion facilities, abortion access, and the difficulties community health centers face in providing IUDs and other methods of contraception. The Turnaway Study has published 4 papers in 2018 comparing women who received and women who were denied a wanted abortion. The analyses examine socioeconomic status, unintended pregnancy, substance use over five years, and attitudes toward abortion.

Media

ANSIRH’s research was featured in 111 media articles from 67 media outlets such as The Atlantic, Teen Vogue, Rewire, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, TIME, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Topics included week-based abortion bans, portrayals of abortion on television, so-called “abortion reversal,” abortion safety, new findings from the Turnaway Study, facilities standards, NIFLA vs Becerra, religious hospital's reproductive healthcare policies, and the recently released National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report on abortion care in the United States. We also published five op-eds and one New York Times letter to the editor.

Awards

Please join us in congratulating ANSIRH’s Monica McLemore for being named the Abortion Care Network's (ACN) Person of the Year. Monica was awarded this distinction for her “commitment to providing patient-centered abortion care.” Learn more about the award, and Monica’s outstanding work, on the UCSF School of Nursing website. Also, make sure to watch the video What Everyone Needs to Know About “Abortion Reversal,” which was produced by UCSF’s Innovation Education in Reproductive Health.

Billboards

ANSIRH's Monica McLemore is also featured on billboards around the Bay Area for a campaign by the Abortion Care Network (ACN) that is challenging deceptive crisis pregnancy centers and so-called “abortion reversal.” Monica was quoted about the campaign in several media outlets, including in articles from Politico, Capitol Public Radio, and Colorlines.
